YEARS 7-10
Strong foundations, deeper learning and real-world connections.
Teaching and learning in Years 7–10 combines the full NSW curriculum with interdisciplinary projects, sustained inquiry and meaningful real-world experiences. Students develop strong foundations in the core subject areas while investigating significant questions, making connections across disciplines and pursuing areas of personal interest. Learning regularly extends beyond the classroom through Newcastle’s cultural, scientific, community and workplace environments. Portfolios, exhibitions, internships and authentic projects allow students to demonstrate what they know and can do, supported by responsive teaching, close relationships and regular feedback.
A key part of our program is experiential learning. This means that classes undertake more than 50 excursions a year. In addition to these offsite excursions we are visited by experts, scientists and thought leaders.
We engage with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to frame our learning, which allows for students to connect their learning to real world opportunities to look for solutions and contribute to our community.
Futures Lab & Residencies
A key feature of our Year 9 and 10 program is the Futures Lab and Residencies program. After some initial training, students complete work experiences one day a week throughout Year 9 and 10. This real world learning provides early guidance to student interest and allows for much more meaningful choices for subjects when heading into Year 11.
